Mercedes Service Schedule β€” How It Works

Mercedes-Benz uses an intelligent service scheduling system called ASSYST Plus (or MBFS β€” Mercedes-Benz Flexible Service System on older models). Rather than fixed kilometre intervals like many other brands, ASSYST calculates your service interval dynamically β€” factoring in driving style, oil condition, engine load and operating temperature.

The result is a countdown displayed on your instrument cluster showing the kilometres or days remaining until your next service. When it reaches zero, the system will prompt you with either an "A Service Due" or "B Service Due" message.

The services alternate: A, B, A, B β€” with A being the lighter service and B the more comprehensive one. Understanding what each covers helps you know what to expect, budget appropriately and ensure your workshop is actually doing everything required.

A Service
~10,000–15,000 km / 12 months
Oil & filter, fluid checks, visual brake & tyre inspection, service indicator reset. The routine, lighter service.
B Service
~20,000–30,000 km / 24 months
All A Service items plus cabin filter, detailed brake check, suspension & steering, diagnostic scan and model-specific items. The comprehensive service.
A Service
~30,000–45,000 km / 36 months
Routine service again. Cycle continues β€” A, B, A, B alternating based on ASSYST calculations.
B Service
~40,000–60,000 km / 48 months
Comprehensive service again. At this interval, additional items like spark plugs, brake fluid and transmission oil may also be flagged depending on model.

What's Included β€” A Service vs B Service

Month Max
~1.5hr
Typical Time
βœ“
Engine Oil & Filter ReplacementUsing the correct Mercedes-Benz specification oil β€” MB 229.5, 229.51 or 229.52 depending on your engine.
βœ“
Fluid Level Checks & Top-UpsCoolant, brake fluid, power steering, windscreen washer and transmission fluid levels checked and topped up where required.
βœ“
Visual Brake InspectionPad thickness and rotor condition checked visually. Full brake test road assessment included.
βœ“
Tyre Condition & PressureAll four tyres checked for tread depth, sidewall condition, even wear and correct inflation pressure.
βœ“
Lights & Wiper InspectionAll exterior lights tested. Wiper blades checked for smearing, streaking and blade condition.
βœ“
Service Indicator ResetASSYST Plus service counter reset via Mercedes-approved diagnostic interface β€” not a generic OBD reset.
A Service note: The A Service is your routine maintenance β€” it keeps fluids fresh, brakes monitored and tyres correct. It's not a comprehensive inspection and does not replace the cabin filter or carry out the deeper checks of a B Service. Both are equally important in the alternating schedule.
20–30k
km Interval
24
Month Max
~2.5hr
Typical Time
βœ“
All A Service ItemsEngine oil & filter, all fluid checks, visual brake, tyres, lights, wipers and service indicator reset.
βœ“
Cabin Air Filter ReplacementThe cabin (pollen) filter cleans air entering the interior. Mercedes recommends replacement at every B Service β€” typically every 24 months regardless of kilometres.
βœ“
Detailed Brake System InspectionPad thickness measured precisely (not just visual), rotor thickness checked against minimum spec, brake fluid condition and boiling point tested.
βœ“
Suspension & Steering CheckBall joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushes, shock absorbers and steering components inspected for wear and play.
βœ“
Full Dealer-Level Diagnostic ScanAll control modules scanned β€” engine, transmission, ABS, airbags, CANBUS and model-specific systems. Fault codes logged and reported.
βœ“
Model-Specific Service ItemsDepending on your model and mileage β€” may include air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs (at 60k), brake fluid flush (every 2 years) and transmission service.
B Service note: The B Service is where deeper issues are caught. The detailed brake measurement, suspension inspection and full diagnostic scan are what separate it from an A Service β€” and why skipping or delaying a B Service on a Mercedes is not recommended.

Mercedes Oil Specifications β€” Getting It Right

This is one area where many general mechanics fall short. Mercedes-Benz engines require specific oil grades approved to Mercedes-Benz standards β€” not just any 5W-30 or 5W-40. Using the wrong oil can void your warranty, damage engine components and cause excessive wear β€” particularly in turbocharged and AMG engines.

At StarTech Prestige, we always use the correct Mercedes-Benz specification oil for your specific engine. Here are the main Mercedes oil specifications and which engines they apply to:

MB 229.5
Most petrol engines pre-2010
5W-30 or 5W-40 full synthetic. Standard specification for many C-Class, E-Class and S-Class petrol engines. Do not substitute with 229.3.
MB 229.51
Newer petrol & hybrid engines
0W-30 or 5W-30 low-SAPS full synthetic. Required for petrol engines with DPF or particulate filters. Lower ash content to protect filter.
MB 229.52
Latest Euro 6 petrol engines
0W-20 ultra-low viscosity. Required for newest C-Class, E-Class and GLC engines. Specifically engineered for fuel efficiency and low emissions.
MB 228.51
All modern diesel engines
5W-30 low-SAPS diesel. Required for all Mercedes CDI diesel engines with DPF. Incorrect oil causes DPF clogging β€” an expensive failure.
MB 229.3
Older petrol engines (pre-2003)
5W-40 full synthetic for older M111, M112 and M113 V6/V8 engines. Not suitable for engines requiring 229.5 or higher specifications.
AMG Specific
AMG M133, M157, M177
AMG engines have their own oil grade requirements β€” often 0W-40 or 5W-50 high-performance specs. Never substitute with standard grades.
⚠️ Important
Always verify the correct specification for your specific engine with your workshop. Some models have oil specification stickers inside the oil filler cap. If in doubt, call us on 03 8782 0711 β€” we'll confirm the correct grade for your Mercedes before your service.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Mercedes A Service includes an engine oil and filter replacement using the correct Mercedes-Benz specification oil, fluid level checks and top-ups, visual brake inspection, tyre condition and pressure check, wiper and light check, and a service indicator reset. It is typically due every 10,000–15,000 km or 12 months.
A Mercedes B Service includes all A Service items plus a cabin air filter replacement, a detailed brake system inspection including brake fluid condition, full suspension and steering check, dealer-level diagnostic scan across all modules, and any model-specific items flagged by the service indicator. It's due every 20,000–30,000 km or 24 months.
Yes. Australian consumer law (and European laws that influenced Mercedes global policy) entitles you to service your vehicle at any qualified workshop without voiding your manufacturer warranty, provided the correct oil specifications and approved parts are used and services are carried out on schedule. StarTech Prestige uses correct Mercedes specs on every service.
Mercedes-Benz specifies oil to the MB 229.5, 229.51, 229.52 or 228.51 standard depending on the engine. Using the wrong oil can cause engine damage and void your warranty. The specification is listed inside your oil filler cap or in your service manual. StarTech Prestige always uses the correct Mercedes-approved oil grade.
Your Mercedes instrument cluster displays a service countdown via the ASSYST Plus system. When it reaches zero, it will display either "Service A" or "Service B" along with a wrench icon. The services alternate β€” A, then B, then A, then B. If you're unsure, call us on 03 8782 0711 and we can check your service history.
