Mercedes Service Schedule β How It Works
Mercedes-Benz uses an intelligent service scheduling system called ASSYST Plus (or MBFS β Mercedes-Benz Flexible Service System on older models). Rather than fixed kilometre intervals like many other brands, ASSYST calculates your service interval dynamically β factoring in driving style, oil condition, engine load and operating temperature.
The result is a countdown displayed on your instrument cluster showing the kilometres or days remaining until your next service. When it reaches zero, the system will prompt you with either an "A Service Due" or "B Service Due" message.
The services alternate: A, B, A, B β with A being the lighter service and B the more comprehensive one. Understanding what each covers helps you know what to expect, budget appropriately and ensure your workshop is actually doing everything required.

Mercedes Oil Specifications β Getting It Right
This is one area where many general mechanics fall short. Mercedes-Benz engines require specific oil grades approved to Mercedes-Benz standards β not just any 5W-30 or 5W-40. Using the wrong oil can void your warranty, damage engine components and cause excessive wear β particularly in turbocharged and AMG engines.
At StarTech Prestige, we always use the correct Mercedes-Benz specification oil for your specific engine. Here are the main Mercedes oil specifications and which engines they apply to:
What Happens If You Skip a Service?
Mercedes-Benz vehicles are engineered to close tolerances. Skipping or significantly delaying services β even by a few months β has compounding consequences that most owners don't realise until the damage is done.
Oil Degradation & Engine Wear
Degraded engine oil loses its ability to protect internal components. Extended drain intervals cause sludge buildup, increased wear on bearing surfaces and β in worst cases β timing chain guides to fail prematurely. This is exactly what happened in large numbers of M271 and M272 Mercedes engines.
Warranty Implications
If your Mercedes is still under manufacturer or dealer warranty, missed services can void coverage for engine and drivetrain claims. You are not required to service at a Mercedes dealership β but services must be performed on time with correct oils and parts logged properly.
Missed DPF and Emissions Issues
Mercedes diesel vehicles need the correct low-SAPS oil to prevent DPF clogging. Using standard oil or extending intervals causes accelerated DPF blockage β leading to regeneration failures and, ultimately, a $2,000β$4,000 DPF replacement that is 100% preventable with correct servicing.
Resale Value Protection
A fully stamped and documented service history adds real value when selling. Mercedes buyers check service records closely β a gap or missing service immediately raises red flags and typically costs you $1,500β$3,000 off the sale price. Servicing on time pays for itself at resale.
